I have had this reworked and now it is playable, however if I had to do it again I would go Lanikai, or with a Plectrum 4 string tuned DGBE. I was shocked to find it set up correctly and ready to play right out of the box. The only way I modified this uke was to remove the High G string and replace it with a wound Aquila Low G. This ukulele is the tenth in my collection, and the first of them that didn't require me to remove and shave the bridge piece to bring the action down. This uke sounds great unplugged, especially for the player with the side ported sound hole. I was a bit shocked when I noticed the depth of the body in comparison with the others I own, the Riptide has a nice deep body that provides a deep lush tone, especially in the lower registers, perfect for Low G tuning. The inlay and finish are beautiful, the binding and rosettes around the top and side sound holes are neat and clean and the black finish is deep and super glossy. The tuners are excellent quality with smooth, sealed gears and attractive black ebony colored buttons. The nut and bridge are neat and well crafted out of a synthetic bone material, not cheap molded plastic, and the intonation is excellent. The frets are one of the highlights of this uke, not the frets themselves, but the attention to detail during their installation, not a sharp edge, high/loose fret on the neck! The electronics are very good as well, but the kicker is the built in tuner! I played guitar for a few years, but there are too many chords that my short fingers just can't reach. I tried the mandoline, but I hate steel strings because they cut into my fingers. The ukulele is easy to play and easy on your fingers because of the nylon strings. I am already playing songs and making up my own chords.When I was looking for a Ukulele, I did my homework for a couple of months before purchasing this one. I went to stores and tried them out. I almost bought the $80 Lanikai, but thought for just a bit more I could have one that has a nice finish and would last many years. So I almost bought the lower end Spruce or the Koa laminate Lanikai. Then I picked this Luna up and started playing it. The strings that come with it are much better than anything out of the box. The arch on the neck is shallower than the Lanikai which was easier for me to play. Some may prefer a deeper neck; that is personal choice. But when I picked this little beauty up and started playing it, it was like putting on a pair of italian leather shoes. It felt like a perfect fit. I couldn't put it down. I kept trying others, but kept going back to the Luna.The sound quality was far and above better than anything else I picked up and strummed. It has a warm rich tone unlike some more expensive Uke's that sounded tinny to me. The strings have stayed in tune for me for the most part. Just slight adjustments occasionally. I didn't purchase a tuner yet. I am using a free one on the internet.The pick-up on it was just a bonus! You usually have to pay $100 more for a Uke with this feature. I plugged it into my sons amp and it sounded great.I also did not find any Ukulele in this price range with the details of this Luna. The mother-of-pearl inlay on the frets is amazing; they are ocean waves! And the finish on the Koa laminate is soft and beautiful. It is warm and velvet soft to the touch.This is a bargain at $230! Here's my issue with the Gold Tone BUS (Soprano) Banjo Ukulele...I've wanted a banjo uke for quite some time, but I didn't have $300-400 to get one with a decent reputation. Mind you, this has been going on since before the market became flooded with all kinds of "new" ones. When I finally accumulated a couple of hundred dollars in Amazon gift certificates, I decided this was the time to cash in and live my dream.Unfortunately, although I'd been hearing about some really good banjo ukes that are a bit less expensive, the Gold Tone was pretty much the only banjo uke for sale on Amazon. I had to chip in an extra hundred bucks to reach $315 + tax, but I finally did it on New Year's Eve 2010-11. For this amount of money, I assumed I'd at least get the best-made banjo uke out there. Needless to say, I spent the next few days staring out the window, waiting for my shipment to arrive. And when it did, I couldn't tear the box open fast enough.Now, being an experience ukulele player, I knew what I needed to do to get this instrument in reasonable shape to strum the first few chords. If you've ever played a uke right out of the box, you will know what I mean. The strings (some knock-off brand - NOT Aquilas)needed stretching, the bridge, resonator, and drum head needed adjustment, etc. These are all par for the course, so not a deal-breaker -- unless you don't know how to do these things (in which case, I would suggest you avoid buying a banjo uke altogether). The Gold Tone BUS comes with a removable resonator, which, in my case, had been installed unevenly, leaving an inconsistent gap around its perimeter, where the resonator forms a gap with the banjo body. When I tried to adjust it, it became immediately apparent that the screws holding the resonator to the body had been inserted crooked at the factory and had damaged the screw holes accordingly. Therefore, no amount of adjustment was going to straighten this thing out; a minor annoyance, but the first sign that this was not the top-notch instrument I had been led to believe it was.Anyway, once I gave the instrument a layman's set-up, I proceeded right to the moment of truth, the moment I would first play "Ain't She Sweet" and "Five Foot Two" on an ACTUAL BANJO UKE. This is where the disappointment began.Besides the sloppy installation of the resonator, I immediately noticed that the resonator made the instrument sound a little muddy. Several banjo players had recommended that I play the banjo uke open-back, based on my style of uke-playing, so I decided to remove the resonator altogether. Everything was included in the pack and "seemed" great. I got the Sunburst pattern and the guitar looks really nice. The amp and the rest of the gear was all good for the price. The problem was that when I tuned the guitar I had to raise the bridge way too much to get rid of some buzzing from the fret bars. Even after that I still got the buzzing when I played vigorously. Also I could feel the edges of the fret bars on the neck which I think means that the wood of the neck had shrunk and probably warped a little (sitting in a warehouse too long maybe). I chose to repair these issues instead of returning the guitar. I like it very much and I doubt that getting another pack at the same price point would get me any more quality. If my experience was not the norm then I would give this pack a 4 or 5.**UPDATEThe warped neck was unrepairable by the epiphone dealer in my area. They sent it back (warranty) and I got a NEW Epiphone "Dot Studio" as a replacement because it would have been 90 day till they could replace it with a similar model. With all of the great reviews on Kala Ukuleles, I had to try their soprano.As far as the looks go, although not the Koa looking one in the picture, the one that arrived was still nice. This is a simply made instrument and that's to be expected as it is not on the same build or cost level as a Kamaka, Ko'olau or Pono.But that in no way takes anything away from this ukulele!The fingerboard is nicely done especially the nickel silver fretwork. There are no fret ends sticking up and they are nicely rounded at their ends. After tightening the screws on the end of the friction tuners the soprano stayed in tune perfectly. Do not over tighten these screws! Tighten only in small increments.The intonation was great. The neck is very comfortable with no surprises. Bar chords are easily played with a nice rolled edge on the fingerboard.The real gem, in this instrument, is the sound quality! It has excellent projection with the traditional "Bark" when bouncing around on the strings playing chords. Fingerpicking produces very clear and melodic notes! Fretting is also effortless.This little instrument was singing to me when I was taking the wrapper off, so I knew it was going to sound great! Overall, the solid mahogany and ebony looked nice, but upon closer inspection I saw the workmanship was nothing short of shoddy: the bone nut was actually crooked, resulting in the E string laying much closer to the fretboard. The ebony bridge was roughly sawn, with jagged edges exposed. The ebony fretboard was not oiled or waxed, which looked unfinished next to the high-gloss ebony headstock laminate. Tuning machines were suprisingly cheap looking (seemed to do their job fine, however), with some of the "gold tone" paint exposing the silver underneath. I was most surprised, however, at Lanikai's decision to string this "designer" instrument with cheap black nylon strings. NakayamaI have a Soprano, a Concert and this Tenor Ukulele. The Soprano I inherited from my Dad who was a great Uke player. Both the Concert and Tenor are Oscar Schmidts. All three are tuned the same. When tuned up, the chords are perfect (it does take quite a while for the strings to finally stretch out, which is normal). I found that that the tenor is the right size for my fingers and has a bigger sound that I like. Although, it takes significantly more finger muscle to push down on the strings, because the strings are heavier and are strung tighter the get the same tuning, but not much different than playing a classical guitar, except for having two less strings. The tuners operate very smooth and easy, which I like alot. The finish is excellent and beautiful. Warm tones from the all-koa body go along with the great look and feel. I prefer the look of black nylon strings (third wound C string) and the tenor is my favorite ukulele sound. I was very excited, because this is my first Ukulele. I got a Baritone, because I play and teach guitar. It uses the same tuning as the top four strings of the guitar. I plan to use it with my younger students as a tool to learn chord shapes, and use it for myself, because I love all forms of music.The Sound: To me it sounds pretty good! The hole configuration is different, but it works nicely, and you can hear yourself.Construction: I was a little worried after I ordered it because some of the other reviews I have seen, but I am very pleased. I think that they fixed some finishing issues, and it is light and sturdy. Different but pretty darn cool looking to me. Nice little bonus is that they put Aquila Nygut strings on it. Intonation seems right on, and no crazy fret edges or anything like that. Only thing that I would like to see is a little better tuners, but they work, and that is what really matters!One little issue: I have had the Uke for a day now, and the "D" string broke at the tuning head. I am hoping this is just an anomaly, which I am pretty sure it is.Anyway, Would I recommend it? When this ukulele and I have been together longer, I plan on updating my report.I've started playing on a little flea market purchased uke, and my husband recently bought a Lanakai LU 21C concert ukulele. The other evening I picked his up and realized how much easier and more pleasant it was. Don't get me wrong, the flea market instrument is remarkably good for what it is, and manages to stay in tune longer than most things do. But, it isn't effortless to play. As a beginner, I know I'm more likely to stick with something if it is fun.Started looking at my affordable options online. The more I read, the more curious I became. Last night we went to one brick-and-mortar instrument retailer where I played with several models, including something I really thought I wanted. Nothing was a need, nothing was going to give me anything more than I already had. Or, was going to be the right instrument for me to learn on, maybe a later indulgence. Another instrument retailer was immediately nearby, so we popped in there. Just to see. I'd not heard of the Mitchell brand, was told it's Guitar Center's exclusive, though as we can all see, it can be found online.First impression was being dazzled by its looks. But I wasn't going for looks (in fact I can't wait for it to be a little less shiny). But it was clear that this is a very solid piece of craftsmanship. It felt right, it sounded good. I also tried out the MU70 model, which was nice. But I felt like this MU100 fit me. So much so that it feels sentient in my clutches, like one of my cats nestling into me. And it just felt so very well made.Now, this has no bearing on how good an instrument will be, and I don't know what made me do this, but I extended my arm, held out two fingers, and laid the base of the back of the neck on those fingers. It balanced perfectly, ignoring gravity.I'm not someone who goes about balancing things, I still don't know why I did this.It was a little more than I was planning at the moment to spend, especially on an unfamiliar brand. But as I sat with it I realized that anything else I would try if I continued to shop would be being compared to this one. And I recognized it would take me awhile to outgrow this one. Might as well give in. So I did.I downplayed the looks, but it really is beautiful. Dazzling abalone trim. The binding on the neck is a good quality.Purists criticize this model for being laminated wood. Yes, it doesn't breathe as freely as some others, but it has a very good voice of its own. Maybe I just lucked into a particularly good one, but I think this uke is brilliant.I know there's that breaking in period where ukuleles go out of tune constantly. We'll get through that. He let me strum it a bit and I found that I really liked the sound coming out of it. I've never had the patience to learn to play an instrument but the ukulele with just four strings didn't seem so foreboding. I looked around quite a bit on line checking out decent entry level ukes. Based on reviews and the way it sounded to me, I kept coming back to this one. (I know nothing about musical instruments, it just sounded good). So now I've had it for about a month and rarely a day goes by when I don't pick it up either to practice what I've learned or to try something new. I know about ten chords and I'm getting to where I can change from one to another fairly smoothly. I can strum several different songs and have begun to sing along with "Ring of Fire" and "She'll be Comin' Around the Mountain." I've also taught myself to finger pick "Aloha Oe" (I know it well enough that I don't need to look at the finger diagrams) as well as "Ode to Joy" and "Little Brown Jug" (looking at the diagrams). My next goal is to learn to read the music. I think I'm going to jump on that tomorrow.One last thing, this ukulele stays well tuned. I bought an electronic tuner (recommended) and an inexpensive gig bag (also recommended). HazenI bought this when it was on sale for 350. I see now that it's even cheaper (321). Bought a hardshell case from a local pawn shop for $20 and I was good to go. But I had to do some work on it when I got it. I opened it up to check out the cone, as I have read you need to replace it with a national. The neck is very cheaply glued on, and braced with cheap wood. Very disappointing. And the bracing really dampened the body's vibration so that there was very little volume and sustain. So I took a fine saw and cut out the lower half of the bracing... so the neck is still braced, but not in the lower/bass half of the body where most of the vibration happens. (Google "mushroom mod" and you should find some instruction somewhere on it.) Then I took off about 1/16 to 1/8" of the saddle to lower the action so I could do some finger style (it was slide-only when I got it). Then I took a dremel with a cutting wheel and cut notches in the tailpiece so the strings would sit down lower in order to increase pressure on the cone, to increase volume and sustain. Then I put new Daddario 16/56 reso strings on it. NOW it sounds GREAT. But I don't know about the longevity because of the cheapo bracing. If the neck comes apart, I'm gonna bolt it on myself, I think. All in all, I really enjoy playing it. I don't want to drop two or three grand on a national. 350 with a little modding... and it sounds like a national (I know; I just played several) AND without having yet put in a national cone! Maybe when I put in the national cone it will actually sound better than a national! Hmmm. That might be hoping a little too much. Oh... and I don't think the nut is bone... it looks plastic to me. So I settled on the Lanikai LU-21B Baritone Ukulele. I wish there were more song books for the baritone ukulele. I did lots of searching for different brands in different price ranges. Some were $50 and some were over $150. I thought about ebay to get a vintage Harmony or other similar priced uke. But I really like the Lanikai LU-21B it has great sound qualities. The finish is good and simple, looks like an oil rub. The build looked good it is awful lite but I don't have another to compare it to. I didn't like that it was made in China. I would like to have known that in advance. I would have payed extra to get an instrument made elsewhere such as Haiti or another needy place with a less repressive regime. I may buy a Koa model if they are made somewhere else in the near future. The high "a" string in particular always sounds a little 'off'. (I use an electronic tuner.) I expect new strings to stretch a little, but even after owning it for 3 weeks, none of the strings hold a tune for more than a few minutes. I don't know what brand of strings it came with, maybe a different/better brand would stay in tune better. FrerisFor anyone interested in buying a ukulele and can afford it, the Applause Ukulele is the one to buy. If you've ever heard ukulele's before, you'll agree that most have a sound that's just not quite right. It's as if they are out of tune, even when they're not. I know some will argue that's how they're meant to sound, but it never sat well with me. I played classical guitar and I expected the better ukulele's would be able to emulate that same harmonious in tune timbre. Unfortunately, you can spend a thousand dollars and still not get a great sound (when compared to a classical guitar). Fortunately, I've now been proven wrong, the Applause ukulele sings like a guitar. If that's the sound you're after, you wont be disappointed. P.S.
